During colonial times, Salvador was the capital of Brazil. due to the unevenness of its terrain and for strategic purposes, the city was built in two levels. Salvador is famous for its 365 churches, religious and historical treasures, and also for its beautiful sandy beaches hugging the coast. The African slaves brought their macumba (voodoo) rites to Brazil. Even today, the Candomblé cult is strong in Bahia. From Christmas through March, the Salvador calendar is full of interesting events, such as the offerings thrown into the sea during the New Years eve for Iemanjá, the goddess of the waters in the Candomblé rites. Many religious festivities keep the the people of Salvador in constant move. Famous throughout Brazil, the Mercado Modelo, a covered market offers a rare opportunity for taking your pick among ceramics, leather and wood craft, hand-made hammocks and embroidered articles.
