Any tour of Manaus must include the Amazonas Theater, a silent witness to the rubber boom; the Indian Museum which houses a rich collection of Indian handicraft; the Customs House made of stone imported form Portugal; the Floating Docks, an ingenious British engineering feat designed to hold its own during river floods; and the "Meeting of the Water" of the Black Negro River with the pale brown Amazon.

CITY TOUR

Daily at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Approximate duration: 3 ½ hours.
Manaus is truly a city of contrast and this excursion starts with a guided drive throught the city including the waterfront and historical area with the Customs House, pre-fabricated in England, and San Sebastian Square. One of the highlights is a stop at the remarkable "Teatro Amazonas", where great artists such as Caruso have graced the stage of this magnificent Opera House - a remnant of Manaus rubber boom days. Built in 1896 and recently restored to its entire royal splendor, this fabulous hall seems completely out of place in the dense jungle setting. Afterwards, the bus will arrive at the Indian Museum, dedicated to the lost Indian cultures of the region, which features wooden blowpipes, feather headdresses and unexplained artifacts. After a ride through the historical part of Manaus the bus will arrive at the Municipal Market, built in the beginning of the century and situated near de docks. The market contains a fascinating assortment of local products such as tropical fruits, river fish, handicrafts and medicinal plants.
