Manaus - AM
 |
Manaus is the gateway to the Amazon jungle. Its attractions
are many:alligator spotting, fishing, or just trips along the rivers. There is also
tax-free shopping, since Manaus is a free-zone. The local cuisine is exotic
and quite different from any other. It includes river fish, turtles and
tropical fruit exclusive to this part of the world.
Any tour of Manaus must include the Amazonas Theater, a silent witness
to the rubber boom; the Indian Museum which houses a rich collection of
Indian handicraft; the Customs House made of stone imported form Portugal;
the Floating Docks, an ingenious British engineering feat designed to
hold its own during river floods; and the "Meeting of the Water" of the
Black Negro River with the pale brown Amazon.

SERVICES IN MANAUS |
| CITY TOUR |

Daily at 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
Approximate duration: 3 ½ hours.
Manaus is truly a city of contrast and this excursion starts with a guided
drive throught the city including the waterfront and historical area with
the Customs House, pre-fabricated in England, and San Sebastian Square.
One of the highlights is a stop at the remarkable "Teatro Amazonas", where great artists such as Caruso have graced the stage of this magnificent Opera House
- a remnant of Manaus rubber boom days. Built in 1896 and recently restored
to its entire royal splendor, this fabulous hall seems completely out of
place in the dense jungle setting. Afterwards, the bus will arrive at the Indian
Museum, dedicated to the lost Indian cultures of the region, which features
wooden blowpipes, feather headdresses and unexplained artifacts. After a
ride through the historical part of Manaus the bus will arrive at the Municipal Market,
built in the beginning of the century and situated near de docks.
The market contains a fascinating assortment of local products such as tropical
fruits, river fish, handicrafts and medicinal plants.

| MEETING OF THE WATERS |
Daily at 9:00 AM and 2:30 PM.
Approximate duration: 4 ½ hours.
Your adventure begins with a boat ride up the dark waters of the "Rio Negro".
The riverboat cruises in front of Manaus with an overview of the floating
Harbor, the Customs House and the Municipal Market, built in the rubber
boom period, of the beginning of the century XX. Finally you reach the "Meeting
of the Waters" to witness one of the most awe-inspiring sights in all of
nature. Here the murky waters of the "Solimões River" meet the black "Rio
Negro" waters, continuing to flow together for miles without intermingling
and forming then the amazing "Amazon River". Your regional boat navigates
alongside the two different colored waters - an incredible sight. On the
way to Lake Janauary nature preserve you'll see the huts of the "ribeirinhos"
clustered on the river banks, an interesting look at the rustic life of
the Amazonian river banks people. At Lake Janauary you'll visit the waterlilies
- "Vitorias-Regias" - to be then transferred into motorized canoes, to journey
deeper into the narrow overgrown tributaries known as "igarapes". With interesting
commentaries from your guide, you'll take the way back to Manaus on board
the regional riverboat.
This tour is also offered for private parties, rates are at the end of
this page.
